M.C. Beaton has two very popular series. Of the two, I like the Hamish MacBeth books better than those featuring Agatha Raisin. Hamish is frustratingly clueless and Agatha is cynical yet naïve in her own way. Both series are written in a straightforward way, with not a lot of character development or great sensory detail. They’re more tell than show ... the bonbons of mystery books.
